Master Drilling, a JSE-listed drilling solutions provider is advancing and developing in this ever-growing, ever-diversifying landscape with its new, innovative technology – a mechanised blind shaft boring system.
The system designed in 2015, comprises of various novel ideas patented by Master Drilling which will be licensed for manufacturing in Q1 of 2016. The solution is a mechanised system for shaft sinking in hard rock conditions. The Blind Shaft Boring System (BSBS), will be available for implementation early 2018.
Master Drilling will launch the system at the prominent annual Mining Indaba during 8 – 11 February 2016. Industry counterparts will have the opportunity to view the exhibited BSBS and reverse circulation shaft boring system models and also receive a presentation on the functionality of the BSBS.Keeping ahead of global demand and ensuring its specialised services secure the firm as market leaders, the Master Drilling team constantly explore new innovations to ensure continued delivery of value-added service to its clients in mining, energy and civil industries.Distinctively known for its unique approach to projects, Master Drilling has developed the system to create access for man, material and establish ventilation shafts of up to 14m in diameter and 2 000m deep in hard-rock applications.
The system further displays exceptional features as it is suitable for any greenfield or brownfield underground mining application at copper, zinc, gold, iron-ore and platinum mines, among others. It strongly places Master Drilling at a competitive advantage as current mechanised raise boring services require bottom access underground.Contributing to improving mine production and logistics, the innovative system addresses the need for a safer, faster, flexible and lower cost method to access underground orebodies without existing underground access.Through Master Drilling’s extensive global footprint, the firm witnessed the high demand for specialised drilling solutions. Ultimately, this groundbreaking mechanised blind shaft boring system will shape Master Drilling’s expertise, strengthen their current position and permit entry into new markets.
As Master Drilling operates in a challenging mining market, this global drilling solutions provider continues to redefine technological drilling advancements and introduce pioneering solutions to the market that support the latest mine designs and construction methods and requirements.Master Drilling CEO, Danie Pretorius says, “We continue to define success through our commitment to providing specialised drilling solutions.”
2015 saw the start of the groundbreaking Palabora contract. Operations at Palabora Copper Mines report completion of the civil construction and pre sink by piling on both shafts, as well as the completion of the directional pilot drilling of the first shaft. This was achieved with a deflecting of a mere 0.5m from the theoretical shaft centre line over a depth of 1200m in steep dipping/varying rock formations. .
