Drilling in the mining industry used to be about how deep you could go and how quickly you could get there. Whether it was exploratory drilling or production stage blasting, it was (and is) a dangerous line of work to be involved in. But a shift has clearly taken place. There were 112 mining related fatalities in 2012, down from 270 in 2003, a clear indication that miners are placing a greater emphasis on safety.
